In the Hong Kong AsiaWorld-Expo, more than 3,200 booths bring together global wisdom, and smart home products are moving from solving basic security needs to a new era of creating emotional value.

Smart Home Exhibitors Share Industry Insights and Outlook

The Global Sources Mobile Electronics Show and the Global Sources Smart Home, Security & Appliances Show will be held at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong from April 18 to 21, 2025. As one of the world’s largest electronics sourcing shows, the show brings together more than 2,800 mobile electronics booths and more than 400 smart home booths, showcasing the latest achievements in AIoT, smart home, mobile electronics and other fields13.

Smart Home Exhibitors Share Industry Insights and Outlook2

During the exhibition, IDC Consulting released a report predicting that China’s smart home market will ship 281 million devices in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 7.8%, of which the smart lighting market will lead the growth by 26%.

01 Exhibition scale and industry background
The second phase of the Global Sources Hong Kong Exhibition has become an important indicator for global electronic product procurement. According to the organizer’s data, the mobile electronics exhibition area has gathered more than 2,800 booths, covering multiple fields such as mobile devices, smart wearables, AR/VR, energy storage products, TWS and mobile accessories.

In the Smart Home Zone, more than 400 booths displayed more than 10,000 products featuring intelligent design, covering three major categories: smart home, security products and household appliances1.

This scale indirectly confirms IDC’s market forecast: under the background of government policies to promote consumption, traditional home appliance categories are accelerating into the product structure upgrade cycle, and home appliance products are moving towards high-end, intelligent, high-quality and personalized directions.

A special “Analyst’s Choice Area” was set up at the exhibition site, where professional analysts carefully selected and displayed popular innovative products. At the same time, a number of industry seminars were held, where experts discussed popular industry trends such as artificial intelligence and carbon neutrality.

02 Innovation drives industry change
The results of the Global Sources Innovation Competition announced on the first day of the show highlighted the direction of industry innovation. This year’s competition collaborated with the international design award European Product Design Award (EPDA) for the first time to add a product design award.

The judging panel is composed of authoritative organizations such as the Hong Kong Electronics Technology Industry Association and the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association. They conduct strict screening based on multiple dimensions including design concept, innovation, quality and market potential.

“In the face of global uncertainty, exhibitors and buyers still came to the event with firm conviction, which fully demonstrates the recognition of the value of the exhibition by all parties,” said Wei Hu, CEO of Global Sources, at the award ceremony. “These products, which are unique in terms of function, design and innovation, point the way forward for global trade participants.”

Laurent Devos, CEO of the European Product Design Award, stressed that this collaboration reflects the joint commitment of both parties to discover and celebrate top design and innovation achievements on a global scale.

03 Deep evolution of intelligent trends
The products and solutions displayed by exhibitors reveal the direction of intelligent evolution of the smart home industry:

The rise of large-scale vertical AI models in the home
Leading manufacturers are working hard to develop large models for the home vertical domain, providing services with more accurate understanding and more precise emotional perception in home scenarios, bringing about an all-round upgrade in interaction, services, and scenarios. These large models customized for smart home scenarios focus on meeting the needs of specific users and specific locations, and realize the transformation from “helping you” to “understanding you”.

Continuous expansion of user base
Products suitable for the elderly, pets and the disabled have become new hot spots. Various regions have successively launched subsidies for home adaptation for the elderly, supporting the development of functions such as toilet assistance, sensor lighting, and health monitoring4. Products such as pet-specific air purifiers and pet-version sweeping robots are growing rapidly, and barrier-free products such as gesture-controlled smart lights for the hearing-impaired are also accelerating their upgrades.

Smart homes are evolving from providing a basic sense of security to creating a sense of happiness.

Connectivity is becoming more unified
The interconnection of smart home products continues to deepen, and the unified connection method simplifies the device pairing and linkage process, providing users with more flexible and diverse smart scene setting options. Based on the unified connection standard, manufacturers are jointly building an open and shared smart home platform to promote cross-border integration and innovation.

Emotional value becomes a new demand
Users’ experience demands for smart home appliances are upgrading from functional satisfaction to emotional dependence. Smart home appliances provide more personalized and considerate services by analyzing user behavior habits, emotional changes and environmental information.

Smart lighting products create an atmosphere by adjusting the color and temperature of the light; mother-and-child cameras and pet feeders enable screen monitoring and voice intercom; and sleep monitoring equipment provides companionship value for people living alone.

04 Cross-border integration and scenario innovation
The fourth-generation housing concept is promoting the deep integration of multiple fields. This concept emphasizes ecological, humanized and intelligent design, and promotes high-end housing from single-product intelligence to scenario-based intelligence.

During the pre-installation process, for spaces such as sky gardens and urban balconies, the integration of home appliances, life lines and decoration styles are taken into consideration simultaneously to achieve a harmonious unity of smart homes and home aesthetics.

In the design of large houses in super first-tier and coastal cities, smart homes are integrating with multiple fields such as architecture, energy, environmental protection, gardening, art, feng shui, and philosophy.

Industry leaders are also improving their product line layout and entering more refined product categories. In 2025, many leading companies are actively expanding their product matrix and exploring niche areas such as sweeping robots, girlfriend machines, and home cameras. With their excellent supply chain management capabilities and channel systems, they will bring new impacts to the industry landscape.

05 Industry Challenges and Future Directions
Despite its promising prospects, the smart home industry still faces multiple challenges:

Uncertainty of going overseas increases
Tax compliance, exchange rate fluctuations, trade policy changes and other factors are plaguing companies going overseas. For traditional home appliance manufacturers, emerging markets are growth engines; for emerging smart home companies, the European and American markets are the key to profits. The complex tax systems and constantly updated tax laws of various countries require companies to have high professional capabilities and business sensitivity.

Privacy and security challenges are escalating
With the development of large models, devices such as cameras and sweeping robots can be more deeply integrated into family life, recording and analyzing user habits, family structure and environmental information, and user privacy concerns have risen to a new level.

Manufacturers need to pay more attention to encryption algorithms and protocols, improve permission management functions, adopt more diverse identity authentication methods, and establish emergency response mechanisms. The IDC report also calls on governments and regulators to formulate stricter laws and regulations and clarify industry privacy and data security standards.

Channel reconstruction and service upgrade
The sales channels of whole-house smart products are mainly offline, and personal experience is crucial to improving user awareness. At the same time, the industry is also opening up new channels such as home decoration and design, and reconstructing the service system.

In the past, refrigerator dealers’ work was done once they delivered the goods and powered them up. But now smart refrigerators need to be connected to the Internet, which collides with traditional services.

IDC China senior analyst Zhao Siquan concluded at the exhibition seminar: “With the empowerment of big model technology, smart homes are evolving from simple interconnection to true whole-house intelligence. The core of this transformation is that devices begin to provide personalized proactive services instead of waiting for user instructions.”
